funday quote

We get another chance at a new year... the Chinese New Year!
Welcome, the year of the dragon.

“We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives… not looking for flaws, but for potential.” —Ellen Goodman

i ski for sarah

The world lost a beautiful icon yesterday: Sarah Burke.  She suffered serious injuries from a training session 9 days before she finally passed.

A Sarah Burke tribute video. from Downtofilm. on Vimeo.
made by Zac Moxley

Hi everybody,
As we know, Sarah Burke has passed away.
Everyone is deeply saddened by this situation and all my prayers go out to family.
I made this video from any clips/pictures I could find.
I hope you enjoy this video.
Thanks
-Zac
RIP Sarah

From Roxy: " Her passing is not a cause to pack up our skis, but rather a reason to step-in and ski for Sarah and the dreams that inspired her star to shine."

You'll be greatly missed, Sarah!!!

day in the life

While most everyone else I know is back at school at this point, starting spring semester, I'm still home. #winning.

My days look something like this:
7 Wake up
put on grungy barn clothes
feed hungry horses – you would've thought they haven't been fed in dayyssss
put heavy barn door back on hinge
scrub freezing water buckets
situate blankets – take off. put on. put on. take off.
realize food is nearly out. make a trip to alpharetta [or find someone like mom to do it :) ]
2:30 squash lesson. runs late per usual
shower and change. quickly
4 [supposed to be babysitting] run by barn to feed again
4:30 finally get to babysitting
jump endlessly on trampoline
get pinched
play silly card games
be a bigger kid than the 3rd grade girl i'm supposed to be supervising
8 her mom releases me!
run back to barn to finish up barn chores
9:30 home again, home again.
dinner {still trying to stick with the cleanse too!}. shower. BED!!!

oh the places you'll go

I want to go to Burning Man some time in my life... Yes, the people are a bit nutty, the atmosphere a desert, and everything kinda dirty, but I think it'd be a hell of an experience.
I also love Dr. Suess. Le duh.

So combine the two... and here's the product:

Also some good words of wisdom as we start a new year!

new year kick off

So Bozz and I have decided to do a 3-4 week detox... starting yesterday.  So, it's not too late to join us!   Katie went to the Dekalb farmer's market to stock up on fruits and veggies.  No caffeine. no alcohol. no gluten. no added sugar. no dairy. and no processed foods. What will we eat? Lots of fruits and veggies and nuts. mmmmm... we'll be adding back foods as we go along.

Today's recipe to share: braised brussel sprouts. {Katie's been bugging me to get a recipe together, so here it is!}

Need:
brussel sprouts
oil/butter
dijon mustard or combination of mustards
broth
dry white wine
salt and pepper

Trim and cut brussel sprouts in half. Heat oil and/or butter [olive oil/coconut oil combo in out case] in a large skillet at mediumish heat.  arrange sprouts cut side down. {If there is not enough room for all of them at once, do multiple batches. Just be sure all are face-side down}  Heat for 5 minutes or so–until the underside is a brownish color.  Then add broth and a dry white wine [enough to cover the sprouts], cover, and bring to a simmer. Simmer until you can stick a fork in them.  Once soft, but not too soft, take out sprouts. Add mustard and cream [aka almond milk for us] to the remaining liquid and reduce.  Once it's reached desired consistency, pour over the cooked brussel sprouts. Voila!

uh oh

This summer, I checked off an item on my bucket list: bungee jumping.  I jumped off the bridge at Victoria Falls, plummeting 111 meters over the rushing zambezi river.  We had a running, not-so-funny joke among the group about what if the bungee rope broke...

Well, last week it did. A poor Australian girl fell into the river at about 20 meters above the rushing water.     With her feet still bound to the cord, she swam to the shore and lived to tell the tale.  "It was quite scary because of a couple of times the rope actually got caught on some rocks or debris," she told an Australian TV network.  She would swim down to dislodge the rope and free herself.  Wow.

funday quote

As we start a new year, remember this:

“I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they’re right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.”

say cheese

So Katie and I have some ideas up our sleeves...
but for now, we had a grilled cheese night! We tested all sorts of combinations of cheeses, veggies, spreads, you name it! A favorite: stinky cheese, sweet potato mustard, roasted kale, sautéed mushrooms. Delicious!

check out our spread

{excuse the outfit. I was working at the barn.}

running on empty

I, personally, have never run out of gas in the car... but one spring break, we were stranded on the side of the road near the blue mesa in CO... I have the video documentation. {If you want to see it, let me know; but due to the humiliation it exposes, I won't be putting it online.}

But today, I got a call from dear Hannah confessing that she had run out of gas on a bridge on Northside. So, Katie, Mom, and I came to the rescue with an old school metal gas canister.
