merry christmas from the mountains

Let the holiday celebrations begin! Mom and I flew out a bit earlier than the boys to meet up with Ali and Bevan in beautiful Salt Lake City. We had some time in gorgeous, cool, blue sky days to site see and shop and finally head to the mountains.

flying into SLC
With the lil jeep filled to the brim with groceries and luggage, Ali, Mom, and I headed west to the mountains, just as Google Maps directed.

solid advice

We were greeted with a cute home for the week and piling snow.

Finally the boys met us up there. Then Aunt Sandy and Uncle Keith. What a house-full of great family!

a house down the road "blew over"  (??) whoops.
while the house was great and seemingly close to the slopes, it was a bit of a hike every day
complete with a nice apres ski hot tub
Christmas Eve included a feast of a dinner after a long day of skiing.  Then, some Moonshiners (the Discovery tv show about making moonshine) and puzzles before Santa could come.
Christmas morning was nice and leisurely. Secret santa gifts were exchanged.  And we woke to a nice dusting of snow outside.

our lil christmas tree. (the mandarine for perspective...)

We made a pit stop at a cheeky martini party on the slopes. Good times had by all on this Christmas Day!

Merry Merry Christmas to all!

home for the holidays

While I wouldn't say I was really home, home for the holidays this year, the whole break was wonderful and my days at home even more treasured.  Being at home included a lot of barn work and some catching up with family and friends.

How about a beautiful winter day paddle with some great people?

including a cheeky jumping rock jump

And a screening of The Hobbit. IMAX. 3D. nearly life changing.
me and Bolling all too excited!
Bolling the grey?
Also, sleepovers, lunch dates, and dinner parties.
Mer Mer returned from her semester in the Turks and Caicos.
Our lifelong neighbors, the Brannen's moved out of their house.  No more trampoline. No more street basketball games. And no more "let's just ask if we can borrow the Brannen's ______."
(a terribly sad walk down memory lane... oh the stories that house has witnessed!)
such good times

happy turkey day

So many things to be thankful for this year!  I'm especially thankful for Grandma and John who came down from Michigan and Scotty from New Zealand (and it was Scott's first thanksgiving ever).  The holidays only get better with great company.

What a better way to start the day of thanks than a paddle down the river?! It was beautiful. perfect.
Yes, 200 lb Nate sat in the middle of the canoe with a ridiculously small paddle.

also scott's first time down a river in a kayak

Beary helping rake leaves!
Be sure to tell the people you're thankful for that you're thankful for them! It's never too late.

sunday funday

So as you few readers (if any left) have figured, the "funday quotes" are pretty nonexistent these days...
In an effort to at least post something, I'm cutting boundaries and opening up my Sunday to more than just words.

Here's something to start/end your week depending on how you want to look at it. This is the promo video for GoPro's newest edition:

Just do.

fall colors

Lucky me, I got to spend my weekend in the great outdoors in North Carolina!
The fall colors are pretty perfect up there. We went to the same place as where I took another PE backpacking group last fall. Thankfully it wasn't quite as chilly, but we did have a pretty thunderous storm in the middle of the night. (a big enough storm to keep me awake worrying about the safety of our spread out camp...)
Some time around 3 a.m. I heard "Elly! Elly!" ..... My immediate response, "Just get inside the tent! It's not safe out there!" Turns out, one of the girls' tents got flooded. The fly blew off their tent and left them in standing water inside the tent. The two of them joined our three person tent to stay semi dry and warmish. Made for an even longer night. Thankfully the storming stopped come morning and we were able to pack up and head out without rain.
All in all, the scenery was beautiful and we had a great group of students.

labor free weekend

For most years I can remember, I was always picked up by a big Suburban loaded with boats and camping gear every Labor Day weekend Friday.  We'd head up to Reliance, TN for a (usually rainy) weekend of kayaking, campfires, karaoke, and great friends.

After a 4 year hiatus, we decided to revisit those memories in the form of a cabin this time.  With way fewer people and no camping, we still managed to pack up a good amount of stuff.  It was a great time.

I drove back Friday after class to sit in traffic and make it for Nate's varsity football game at Lovett. It was so nice to catch up with some old teachers and families from home! I certainly have some great people in my life!!

Then it was a Saturday family road trip up to Tennessee. For the first time in over 6 months, I was finally getting out and about back in the South.

how I've missed home

We arrived to a lovely little cabin in a woods down a long dirt driveway.  It was perfect.

perfect except for this little friend
And right away, we were headed to the put-in for a run down our favorite Hiwassee River.  It's always a cultural experience up in that country. My favorite parenting 101 episode: a guy was inflating his raft via car battery (see below) and yells out at his misbehaving child, "You better shut up or I'll kill you right here in front of everyone!" Good one.
dad of the year
Only minimal mishaps and flips on the river this time! I did manage to swallow a good bit of water but also managed to never have to swim due to my (sorta) newly acquired skill of being able to roll! It was a picture perfect day out on the water! Brought back so many great memories. And after not seeing Joyce for so long, we picked up right where we left off and just laughed ourselves down the river.  What a great friend!

Funny how a day on the water just wipes away all your energy. We were good for not much more than heaps of food, bananagrams, and laughter.

We spent Sunday splashing and laughing our ways down the Ocoee River.  No matter how many times I do it, it is always such great fun! The afternoon brought great thunderstorms and we just sat under the cover of the porch in rocking chairs, watching them pass. It was beautiful.
We also got the news that Mr. Kuik's father passed away. My thoughts are with him and the whole family at this time. Even when you see them coming, goodbyes are never easy.

Monday morning was a quick pack and clean and on the road again for Nate to go to football practice. (such is the life of a high school jock...)

beautiful eastern Tennessee morning!
On the way home, we stopped at a lovely joint on the side of the road: Dirty Dave's.  Dave's got a little bit of everything in there! Dad and Nate were reluctant to go in, but there were certainly some gems worthy of a good laugh.

what's new

I know I've been slacking in the blogging department but that doesn't correlate to my lack of existence.  I'm here! And back in good ole Athens, GA.
So, in the last couple of weeks...

I've been to a couple of Nate's varsity football games

I've had target practice with my new Indonesian dart gun with Mom's furniture

I've been shopping to Costco
what i would've done for a box of these a couple of months ago
I've moved into an apartment downtown with Sam and Nancy (and Gump)
and witnessed sam and gump lovin on the couch
I came back into town just in time for Kappa bid day

We've tortured Bear's dignity

I walk by this lovely strip bar on my way to school every day

I've been missing NZ :(

I've experienced Athens nightlife and all its wonders

I've been enjoying the convenience of living downtown
(including Lazy Shopper's new live security - find the guy on the fridge)

I went to a Drive-by Truckers show at GA Theater

I ran into some car trouble. (thank goodness for convenient gas stations and car manuals)

I dragged Nate to one of my squash tournaments
thrilled to be there
I've taken advantage of a kitchen stocked with granola ingredients

And I'm loving my new apartment! rain or shine!
