So I'm really enjoying school again. {I haven't liked school much at all since high school...} And it's great to get another perspective (besides AMURICA's) on the world from an academic setting.
Teachers (no matter what sort of degree they hold) all go by their first names. They are interactive, even with a 300 person lecture hall. They're professional. They talk about beer and things students can relate to. They care more about your learning than your test scores. They do not give petty assignments for the sake of grading. They are really prepared for class. And, they treat you like an adult. I love it here!
Anyways, I am taking a couple marketing classes, a geography class, and a maori studies class. All of which I enjoy! And I've decided to start sharing some of the gems of class time...
I want to go to Burning Man some time in my life... Yes, the people are a bit nutty, the atmosphere a desert, and everything kinda dirty, but I think it'd be a hell of an experience.
This summer, I checked off an item on my bucket list: bungee jumping. I jumped off the bridge at Victoria Falls, plummeting 111 meters over the rushing zambezi river. We had a running, not-so-funny joke among the group about what if the bungee rope broke...
Well, last week it did. A poor Australian girl fell into the river at about 20 meters above the rushing water. With her feet still bound to the cord, she swam to the shore and lived to tell the tale. "It was quite scary because of a couple of times the rope actually got caught on some rocks or debris," she told an Australian TV network. She would swim down to dislodge the rope and free herself. Wow.
I've been talking about this video a lot lately, and finally decided to share it with my own mother. [Mostly because Katie thinks I was like this little girl as a child] But, we had a lot of fun showing it over video chat!
First, watch the video:
Check out Mom's reactions:
Then she tried to spell out NO [backwards] when I asked if Nate and Ben could join us on our camping adventures this weekend
It should not be new news to you that the one and only Steve Jobs passed away yesterday :( at the age of 56 after a long struggle with pancreatic cancer
I have to admit, it isn't until now with an abundance articles and stories of Steve Jobs that I have a newfound love for the man and his love for creativity and specifically, typography. I love Apple. I love those little Pixar short films. Steve Jobs, you will be greatly missed.
So, please take 15 minutes out of your busy day and watch this commencement speech at Stanford from 2005:
I was so tempted to just copy and paste the whole speech... but I love this quote in particular:
"Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart... Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition."
Hard to believe it's been 10 years since 9/11. Remember what your day looked like?
I loved seeing the life-size polaroids of firefighters and men in uniform in NYC last weekend. That new museum is going to be so cool!
Check out this commercial I just saw:
Saturday in Athens means craziness with a little football thrown in!
So we had our first home game after a loss last weekend to Boise State. Unfortunately, today was another L on the record :( 45–42 vs. USC
But football game means tailgate...
we made some australian friends... :)
bffls!
4th quarter
But losing luckily doesn't completely bring down Bulldawg Nation. Athens was absolutely crazy! And the town was absolutely covered in all things red and black.
A highlight? So, I was driving people Friday night (no, that's certainly not the highlight) and got to catch up with some South African friends! then hang out John (old boss from american mountain who now lives in asheville)!!!! and then proceeded to give a belligerently drunk graduate a ride home. [No, I have no idea who he was/is but he was in town reliving the glory days.] I gave him a ride simply as a good deed. But when he got out, he gave me a wad of money– 2 fifties, 1 ten, and 9 ones.... $119!?!?! what?! I was making bank instead of waking up broke on Saturday morning! Awesome.
